Belief in the Unseen

Read 2 Kings 6:8-23

" ... For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead" (Romans 1:20 , KJV)

There is a common notion that it is not scientific to believe in things that cannot be observed. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The very basis of scientific research is the inference of unseen reality from what may be seen.

Modern physics tells us that there are many, many kinds of subatomic elementary particles. Many of these particles were predicted long before they were observed directly, on the basis of patterns and symmetries found among the then- known particles. These symmetries were striking, yet incomplete -- so physicists deduced the existence of as-yet-unknown particles to fill in the gaps.

In contemporary physics research, superstring theory infers the existence of at least six dimensions beyond the three physical dimensions that we experience directly. There is not a shred of direct observational evidence for any of these dimensions -- but unless they exist, the beautiful mathematical equations which describe the theory are not consistent.

We also have evidence for spiritual realities beyond our direct experience. Though we cannot observe God directly, we may deduce His existence through the beauty and grandeur of the world He has created. Though we have never seen eternal life with our own eyes, our fleeting mortal lives have no significance unless they are part of a much larger picture.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know I only see a small part of Your big picture. Please open the eyes of my heart to understand and appreciate You, and to rejoice in the plan You have for my life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God". Our lives are richer when we see with our hearts.
