The Stone Which Cannot Be Lifted

The stone which the builders rejected Is become the head of the corner. This is Jehovah's doing; It is marvellous in our eyes.  (Psalm 118:22-23, ASV)

One skeptic’s challenge runs as follows.  “Christians say God is omnipotent.  So God can do anything, right?  Can He make a stone so big that He can’t lift it?

Actually, there are many things God cannot do:

God cannot lie (Titus 1:2).  He cannot contradict Himself.
God cannot rejoice at the death of the wicked  (Ezek. 33:11)
God cannot be unjust (Deut 32:4)
God cannot have any darkness within Himself (1 John 1:5)
God cannot be anything but loving, for love is His nature (1 John 4:8)
So it is not true that God can do anything.  But He CAN do anything HE WILLS.  No one or no thing can resist His will (Ro. 9:19).

There are many silly things which men propose to test Him, which God could never do.  Neither did Jesus do miracles for the Pharisees or Herod, no matter how much they baited Him.

Hence God’s omnipotence does NOT mean that He can do anything.  Nonetheless, as far as His being able to make a stone which cannot be lifted,  God can.  And He even goes one better – He has lifted the unliftable stone!  God has made Jesus Christ to be the stone which cannot be lifted, for He has given Him dominion over all things, and His kingdom shall have no end (Daniel 2:31-45, Philippians 2:9-11).  But this same Jesus was lifted up, when God raised Him from death (John 12:32)!

Prayer:   Jesus, thank You that You are the Rock which cannot be moved.  Please be the foundation of our being, the base on which our very identity is founded.
